Winehouse takes on Talented Musicians

Amy Winehouse lost the job of performing the theme song to the new James Bond film due to her inability to stay clean–the gig eventually went to the team of White Stripes’ Jack White and Alicia Keys

But according to the Telegraph UK, Winehouse is threatening to release the version of the Bond theme in order to show the flim (SIC) producers that they have “made a big mistake.”

Said Winehouse, “I guess they are going for clean-cut and boring. When I do release mine – and I am tempted to do it on the same day – this would be the bigger hit…If they change their minds, I’m waiting.”

Yes… those other musicians are such commercial phonies. They’re not indie enough to do the theme for a James Bond movie. The tabloid junkie British soul singer in the cleopatra make-up is obviously the “authentic” one. She’s going to prove she’s legit by selling more records– the true measure of a successful artist.

The problem with Amy Winehouse is that the pattern of celebrity-status usually goes like this:

  1. Garner praise for talent.
  2. Become super-famous.
  3. Develop drug-addiction.

With most artists this usually extends over half a decade or so, but Winehouse managed to do it in about 2 weeks, which is probably why she immediately receded into obscurity.

I rather like Jack White (and The White Stripes) and Alicia Keys. I can’t wait to see what they come up with. As for Amy Winehouse, she’s an awesome singer, but even if her talent and her addictions can exist separately, her image is going to suffer if she doesn’t get cleaned up, and so will her career.

I don’t understand this at all. It doesn’t appear that Winehouse is calling Keys and Black phonies at all. She merely intends to release her song and prove that she’s better because the song is better. There’s nothing about one artist being more indie than the other. Oh yeah, and none of the artists involved here are indie at all. Furthermore, Winehouse had a huge drug problem before she was famous. She will probably die in the next 5 years, so at least have the decency to give her appropriate criticisms before then.

… and she intends to prove her song is better by selling more copies, which doesn’t have anything to do with the quality of the song.

I was mocking the idea of artists being considered better because they’re junkies or have some sort of special quality that makes them dirtier (hairspray and eyeliner?). What really matters is the music they make, not their lifestyle.

…[I]sn’t someone who is on drugs and sings soul music more authentic because she doesn’t care about people’s perception of her as a person (unless you can point out it’s chic to be a junkie)

I would say it is chic to be appear to be a junkie, but more importantly my point is that the whole idea of “authenticity” is bogus. I was mocking the idea of Amy Winehouse being considered cutting edge and independent when in fact she’s just as popular and mainstream as White and Keys.

And I believe she was implying that she would prove they made a mistake because her record would sell more copies. That doesn’t make it a better song (obviously) and it also doesn’t make her product more unique or successful.

To Ranjni: Jack White = The white stripes…meg white can be replaced with a broken drum machine The rest is obvious…you WOULD like all three artists, wouldn’t you

Thanks for stating the obvious, Meg White is no Keith moon. Jack White has another band and has also released solo material. I imagine Ranjni was just stating his preference for that particular Jack White project. Not everything has to be a bitter personal attack. It’s possible just to disagree…

As soon as Bond music becomes the vanguard of artistic music, I’ll consider the point. Otherwise, it kind of seems to me that the whole purpose here is to make a popular song and a popular movie. And still, I don’t see where Winehouse calls them phonies.

As I said I was mocking the idea of authenticity and I used the word “phony” as a synonym for inauthentic or overly commercial. I never said she used the word “phonies.” Winehouse was the one claiming artistic legitimacy with her “clean-cut and boring” line. So she framed the argument about authenticity and the importance of true artistry for a Bond song, not me.

But, seeing as you’re posting under aliases and generally being a contradictory jackass to anyone who disagrees with you, I doubt you ever had any intention of considering my argument.
